Exploring the Stunning Mira de Aire Caves in Portugal!
Join us as we set off on an exciting adventure to the Mira de Aire caves, located in the picturesque Aire and Candeeiros Mountains Natural Park. These caves are renowned for their impressive formations and vast chambers, making them a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.
History and Discovery:
The Mira de Aire caves were discovered in 1947 by a group of local explorers, including Joaquim Martins Avelar, José Formosinho, Antonio Faustino, and Henrique Gomes de Sousa. These pioneers ventured into the unknown depths and unveiled a subterranean world of extraordinary beauty. The caves were later opened to the public in 1974, allowing visitors from around the globe to marvel at their wonders.
Entering the Caves: Our journey begins as we descend into the caves, following the same path that the original explorers took. We'll show you the rope representation that signifies how they navigated these depths with minimal equipment.
Navigating the Chambers: As we explore the various chambers, you'll see the intricate formations up close. From towering columns to delicate curtains, each structure tells a story of time and natural artistry.
The Underground Rain :) You'll witness water droplets falling from the ceiling this process contributes to the formation of new stalactites and stalagmites over centuries and it really annoyed our son :).
Fun:
During our visit, we faced a few challenges, such as the limited lighting within the caves. Our guide informed us that the lights would turn off after 20 minutes, adding a sense of urgency to our exploration. Lukas, our son, was particularly concerned about this and made sure we stayed on track. His excitement and occasional nervousness was quite funny to see.
After approximately one hour of exploration, we emerged from the caves using a lift. The Mira de Aire caves offer a unique glimpse into the Earth's geological past, and our experience here was nothing short of extraordinary. We hope this video inspires you to visit these magnificent caves and witness their wonders firsthand.
If you enjoyed this video, please give it a thumbs up, leave a comment with your thoughts, and don't forget to subscribe to our channel for more travel adventures.
Additional Information:
Location: The Mira de Aire caves are located in the Aire and Candeeiros Mountains Natural Park, near the town of Mira de Aire, in the Leiria district of Portugal.
Visitor Information: The caves are open to the public year-round, with guided tours available. For more details on visiting hours and ticket prices, please visit the official website or contact the local tourism office.
Tips for Visitors: Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring a light jacket as the caves can be cool, and don't forget your camera to capture the stunning formations and wildlife encounters.

So, I gotta admit, that we have been absent from UA-cam and nearly all social media since the pandemic. It's not that we don't travel but rather we have lost the routine of updating and editing videos, photos and content. This, we hope, will slowly change and we can get back to creating memories for the future, and hopefully, you will come along for the ride :) This time we decided it was time ...
Hiking with a kid - Enjoying the great outdoors together
Переглядів 2142 роки тому
After taking a course on hiking we decided to take our son on his first mountain hike. It was a lot of fun and also a learning experience for the next hiking adventures, he did great and got super confident on the first day so on the second day we set out for a more challenging one. How far can a 5 year old hike? It depends of course but they can walk quite a lot as long as you make it fun. Our...
Forest school, what schools could be - Less screen time, more green time.
Переглядів 3742 роки тому
So what is a forest school? Forest schools is an outdoor education style in which students are encouraged to play, explore and develop confidence and self-esteem. I love the idea of supported risk-taking, where a child is "encouraged" to learn and take some risks and learn by trying. It also is a method that uses the child's interests to educate and that is key. I can say that our son loved it,...
Serra da Estrela, a place of rare beauty in Portugal
Переглядів 1,1 тис.2 роки тому
Serra da Estrela was our next stop on the mountaineering course we were taking and boy we were in for quite the bad weather on our first try. The course ended up being postponed due to very bad weather and wind that made it impossible to talk or work on orientation or guidance. After some months we were back, this time in January, right before the pandemic hit, for a weekend of guidance and sur...
Mountain multi-day hikes, our full autonomy experience
Переглядів 1303 роки тому
For some time we had been researching autonomy multi-day hikes in Portugal but never really did one, lack of experience and knowledge made it seem always a little too hard. So when a friend told us about an introduction course to mountaineering where we would have classes about gear, safety and two weekends of practical mountain autonomy hikes, we went for it. What to expect of a mountain hike ...
Science Museum in Lisbon - Pavilhão do Conhecimento
Переглядів 5443 роки тому
Science museums have long been a favourite of mine, doesn't matter the country or city I love them, this one is part of a network of science centres in Portugal (Centros de Ciência Viva) and is located in Lisbon in Parque das Nações. If you are visiting Lisbon and have kids it's a no brainer as it just next to the Oceanarium so a perfect family program for a day. The museum seems to have differ...
Cortegana, recharge and enjoy the views in this Spanish town.
Переглядів 3943 роки тому
We were in our house with no plans for the weekend, something that is not common, so I decided to look at where we could go around where we live and got curious about Cortegana. Where is Cortegana? Cortegana is a city in Spain from the Andalucia province of Huelva. Around the city is the Natural Park of Aracena a Spanish natural reserve a place we had already visited before so we knew we like t...
Budha Eden in Portugal. The garden of peace
Переглядів 2214 роки тому
Budha Eden is part of Quinta dos Loridos a winery that produces mostly sparkly wine for the main brand. In it, you can find Budha Eden a 35 hectare oriental garden with Buddhas, pagodas, terracotta statues and modern art. Living in Portugal we have long been seeing photos of this place and curious as to the reason for even building such a garden. Turns out it was built as a reaction to the dest...
Portuguese tiles - In search of tile history - Convento de São Paulo
Переглядів 2,8 тис.4 роки тому
Tiles are one of the most characteristic aspects of Portuguese culture. You will find tiles covering public areas, buildings, train stations and private houses. They can be simply decorative but they can also remind us of our history or simply illustrate tales that are important to the region. Even though it's seen as a very Portuguese piece of history, the name "azulejo", tile in Portuguese de...
Day trip from Seville - Santiponce, Italica Roman city ruins
Переглядів 1,5 тис.4 роки тому
After seeing some photos online of Italica I was surprised to learn it was right next to Sevilla, a city that I had visited many times before. Being a fan of Roman ruins, well any ruins for that matter I quickly made plans to visit it in the following weeks. Italica It's just northwest of Seville, 9Km. Founded by the Roman Emperors Trajan Hadrien and Theodosius. The ancient city is now Santipon...
London, family weekend breaks
Переглядів 1274 роки тому
(Shot before the Coronavirus outbreak in 2019) London as long been a favourite destination for us but we had been delaying a visit as we thought it might be too busy to visit with a child. A lot to walk and see lots of travel time between one place and the other so probably our son would be tired quite quickly. Still, we arranged a family get together so we prepared as much as possible and went...
Mushroom hunting in Portugal - Silarca (Amanita Ponderosa)

Unlike northern countries of Europe, the tradition of mushroom hunting is not as rooted in the south but there are some exceptions and you can still find regions with strong traditions of mushrooms hunting in Portugal. Jesus loves u so much please help those who don't know what they are talking
This is without a doubt a beautiful region to visit but not with hot weather. We did the full hike of the "Passadiços Do Orvalho" in the cooler season and we even got some rain but it was very pleasant. Thanks for sharing your experience.
True, we got a very hot day and skipped sections of the hike because it was too much. We went around the sections with more shade and it was a great day. Thanks for watching 👍
This place is amazing. I stayed there at a parador
We liked it also, we stayed in the Hotel Balneario El Raposo, a Spa type of Hotel and it was also quite good, with an indoor large swimming pool
I know you did this video a very long time ago, but enjoyed it 😀 I have been to this amazing place twice over the years. One of my favs not just in Europe but the 🌍 is Efteling in Holland-sure you know of it but you ever been? If for some reason you haven't- it is very unique +the rides, shows, areas, food, etc reflect elements from ancient myths, legends, fairy tales, fables, + folklore! The Fairytale Forest alone would take you like 3/4 hours to walk around. I'm from UK in England have you been?
We have been in London without our son and he enjoyed it, had lots of interesting museums for kids. In Efteling we have never been, next on our list would be the Lego house and Legoland as our son loves Legos. We live in Portugal by the way
Shines in dark? Reflective tape? That chick dumb as a pile of crosses
I truly want to go here. My great great grandparents on my fathers side were born in Vilnuis and my great grandparents on my mothers side were also born somewhere in Lithuania (grandmother was born in Ylakiai). I’ve always been fascinated with Lithuania. And the Hill of Crosses is one cool place.
I just booked my hotel in Zafra to see the castle as well. But unlike you, I decided to cancel and will miss the pleasant surprise after watching your video. LOL 😅
Glad to help :) I felt pretty embarrassed trying to look for the castle when I arrived. Although we actually had a good time in Zafra, but of course considering we live not very far it wasn't a big deal for us.
High quality content and helpful when arranging family with kids trip. 898 subs in the time of my seeing. Worth much more!
Very happy to hear that you enjoyed the video. Thanks for the positive feedback, means a lot to us
How about a video on the Polish death camps?
Our son is maybe too young for visiting death camps, but once he is older and can understand some of the more darker periods of history I'm sure we will eventually go.
Hitler wasn’t a wolf, he was sick man
Nice place❤❤❤❤❤
It really is!
This gave me chills! Holy Spirit all over this!
Fast forward 75% of the movie if you dont want to see 700 random clips of irrelevant footage
😂 I wouldn't say 700 clips but yes there is quite a lot of just family clips of just traveling through the city. Hopefully fast forwarding to 75% makes it better if you are just looking for the World of discoveries, or watching at 2.5x 😆 But this is just our families channel so those 700 clips are our travel memories and a way to show our family our small trips.
Belmonte is beautiful ❤
Do you have this kind of Sahara in Portugal
Nothing of this magnitude, this is quite unique I think
Seen plenty of bunkers while runnng around Spain. In Madrid blockhouse 13.
😍 it was a rainy day 🙃🤭

One of my favourite places in Portugal! And I'm also from a beautiful place... Madeira Island!
Madeira is great, we went there for 4 days of hiking and loved it.
Imagine all the crosses goes upside down then 100 nuns appear
I found this on Google already
Even if you're not religious, it's very beautiful and you can probably be moved by how so much people gather these crosses together, and how it can show off hope, togetherness and rising above oppressive circumstances
I agree, the rubbish sickens me
Delightful. Your son is having a GREAT time!
Yes, he loves these travelling adventures 😀

Sir did you know what are these types of white -blue tiles called?
I just know them as Portuguese tiles. If they have representations of history then we call them figurative if they have geometric drawings then they are patterned tiles. The colors can differ both o figurative and patterned but blue seems to be the most common here.
